Essay Wines is a contemporary South African wine brand developed as an affiliated project of MAN Family Wines. Directed by winemakers José Conde and Tyrrel Myburgh, with Riaan Möller as head winemaker, the brand released its very first vintage—a red blend—in 2004.
Essay Wines represents a modern philosophy: crafting delicious, approachable wines that showcase the best varietals grown in South Africa. Both the Essay Red and Essay White are carefully composed blends, offering an authentic expression of terroir alongside a versatile flavour profile that pairs effortlessly with a wide range of cuisines.
The name “Essay” captures the essence of the brand. It plays on the abbreviation “SA” for South Africa, while also referring to the idea of an “essay” as an assemblage—a bringing together of different elements into a cohesive whole.

The grapes for Essay Wines are sourced primarily from the Agter-Paarl region in the Western Cape. This area is known for its Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and wet winters, as well as shale-rich soils.
These natural conditions are ideal for dry-farming—a sustainable viticultural practice where vines are grown without irrigation. While this results in lower yields, it produces more concentrated and expressive fruit, enhancing the overall quality of the wines.
The Essay White blend is inspired by Mediterranean and Rhône-style winemaking traditions, adapted to South African terroir. It typically features Chenin Blanc—South Africa’s flagship grape—enhanced with varieties such as Viognier or Roussanne to add aromatics and texture.
The Essay Red blend centres on Shiraz (Syrah), complemented by Cinsault. The result is an approachable, fruit-driven wine that balances structure with drinkability.
