Essay Wines: A Modern Expression of South African Blends
Introduction to Essay Wines
Essay Wines is a contemporary South African wine brand developed as an affiliated project of MAN Family Wines. Directed by winemakers José Conde and Tyrrel Myburgh, with Riaan Möller as head winemaker, the brand released its very first vintage—a red blend—in 2004.
A Contemporary Approach to Winemaking
Essay Wines represents a modern philosophy: crafting delicious, approachable wines that showcase the best varietals grown in South Africa. Both the Essay Red and Essay White are carefully composed blends, offering an authentic expression of terroir alongside a versatile flavour profile that pairs effortlessly with a wide range of cuisines.
The Meaning Behind the Name “Essay”
The name “Essay” captures the essence of the brand. It plays on the abbreviation “SA” for South Africa, while also referring to the idea of an “essay” as an assemblage—a bringing together of different elements into a cohesive whole.
This concept lies at the heart of Essay Wines. Rather than focusing on single-varietal wines, the brand specialises in blends designed to be greater than the sum of their parts. This philosophy reflects South Africa’s diversity, drawing inspiration from its multilingual identity as a metaphor for harmonious blending.
Sourcing & Terroir: Agter-Paarl
The grapes for Essay Wines are sourced primarily from the Agter-Paarl region in the Western Cape. This area is known for its Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and wet winters, as well as shale-rich soils.
These natural conditions are ideal for dry-farming—a sustainable viticultural practice where vines are grown without irrigation. While this results in lower yields, it produces more concentrated and expressive fruit, enhancing the overall quality of the wines.
The Wines: Essay White & Essay Red
Essay White
The Essay White blend is inspired by Mediterranean and Rhône-style winemaking traditions, adapted to South African terroir. It typically features Chenin Blanc—South Africa’s flagship grape—enhanced with varieties such as Viognier or Roussanne to add aromatics and texture.
Essay Red
The Essay Red blend centres on Shiraz (Syrah), complemented by Cinsault. The result is an approachable, fruit-driven wine that balances structure with drinkability.
A Global Positioning
Essay Wines is positioned internationally as a modern South African brand offering versatile, food-friendly blends. With a focus on balance, accessibility, and thoughtful blending, the wines appeal to both casual drinkers and more discerning wine enthusiasts alike.
