MAN Family Wines: Everyday wines for wine geeks

Introduction to MAN Family Wines

MAN Family Wines (also known as MAN Vintners) is a modern South African wine success story founded in 2001 by José Conde and brothers Tyrrel and Philip Myburgh. Their vision was simple yet powerful: to produce wines that are affordable, high-quality, and enjoyable for everyday drinking.

Each founder brought experience from smaller, artisanal family wineries, combining a boutique winemaking philosophy—focused on careful vineyard selection, balanced fruit, and drinkability—with the efficiencies of larger-scale production.

The Story Behind the Name

The name “MAN” is derived from the initials of the founders’ wives: Marie, Anette, and Nicky. Chosen for its simplicity and global appeal, the name reflects the brand’s early export focus.

It also carries a light-hearted meaning, serving as a subtle tribute to the three women behind the name “MAN.”

A Unique Grower-Partner Model

A defining feature of MAN Family Wines is its grower-partner model. Rather than owning all its vineyards, the company sources grapes from a network of approximately 30 independent farmers, some of whom are also shareholders in the business.

This approach fosters long-term relationships and ensures a consistent supply of high-quality fruit. A significant portion of the grapes is sourced from the Agter-Paarl region, known for its Malmesbury shale soils, dry-farmed vineyards, and old vines, all of which contribute to concentrated flavour.

MAN also maintains strong commitments to sustainability and ethical production through certifications such as Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) and WIETA.

Wine Style and Philosophy

MAN wines are best described as approachable yet thoughtfully crafted—often referred to as “everyday wines for wine enthusiasts.” The wines are typically fruit-forward and expressive, while maintaining enough structure and balance to avoid simplicity.

Consistency is a key priority, particularly given the brand’s strong international presence. Each wine is designed to deliver reliable quality at a competitive price point.

The Core Range

The MAN portfolio focuses on classic, widely loved varietals. These include Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Pinotage, Shiraz, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Each wine reflects the brand’s commitment to quality, balance, and accessibility, making them suitable for both casual enjoyment and more engaged wine drinkers.

Global Positioning and Growth

MAN Family Wines has built a strong global reputation by occupying a valuable space between inexpensive bulk wines and more expensive boutique labels. This “premium value” positioning, combined with clean, recognisable branding and an export-driven strategy, has made the brand highly successful in international markets.

While the broader company portfolio has expanded to include more premium and specialised labels, the MAN brand remains focused on delivering accessible, well-made wines with consistent quality. Its success lies in appealing to a wide audience while maintaining thoughtful sourcing and production practices.
