Lievland Vineyards is a historic Stellenbosch estate shaped by generations of colourful personalities, pioneering spirit, and a deep connection to place. From early European settlers to modern winemakers, the story of Lievland is one of resilience, reinvention, and a lasting commitment to quality wine.
Lievland Vineyards is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains in Stellenbosch, along the renowned “golden mile” of premium wineries. This prime location lies within one of South Africa’s most respected wine-growing regions.
The soils are predominantly decomposed granite with pockets of clay and loam, typical of the Simonsberg area. These soils retain moisture effectively, sustaining vines through the dry summer months while supporting the production of elegant, structured red wines such as Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The estate enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Afternoon sea breezes from the Atlantic Ocean provide a cooling influence, slowing grape ripening and allowing for enhanced flavour development, balanced acidity, and refined tannins.
The amphitheatre-like slopes of the property ensure optimal sun exposure throughout the day, promoting even ripening across vineyard blocks and contributing to the overall quality and consistency of the wines.
Lievland Vineyards dates back to 1715, when the original land was granted to a soldier of the Dutch East India Company. The estate’s Cape Dutch manor house, which still stands today, bears the inscription of 1865 on its gable, reflecting its long-standing heritage.
One of the most intriguing figures in Lievland’s history is Hendrika von Stiernhjelm, a Latvian baroness who acquired the farm in 1934 with her husband. Following his untimely death before their journey to South Africa, Hendrika relocated with her five children and took over the farm herself.
Drawing inspiration from her Baltic heritage, she named the estate “Lievland,” derived from “Livland” or “Livonia,” a historic region in Northern Europe. Archival photographs of the baroness ploughing vineyards with a horse capture the pioneering spirit that continues to define the estate today.
The modern era of Lievland was shaped by Cape Wine Master Paul Benade, whose family purchased the farm in 1973. He played a pivotal role in re-establishing the vineyards with high-quality grape varieties and elevating the estate’s reputation.
Benade invested in vineyard improvements and modernised winemaking facilities, including the development of an underground maturation cellar carved into the slopes of Simonsberg. This cellar remains in use today, providing ideal conditions for ageing wines.
In 1987, Benade partnered with acclaimed winemaker Abe Beukes. Together, they led Lievland to numerous local and international awards, cementing its reputation for premium red wines. Their style was characterised by bold, fruit-forward expressions, particularly Shiraz, and they were among the early adopters in South Africa of blending small amounts of Viognier into Shiraz, inspired by Rhône winemaking traditions.
Lievland was acquired by MAN Family Wines in 2017, marking the beginning of a significant revitalisation. With distribution in over 40 countries, MAN sought a flagship estate to call home and recognised Lievland’s potential both as a premium vineyard site and as a hospitality destination.
Extensive restoration and development followed, including replanting vineyards and upgrading infrastructure. A modern, purpose-built facility now houses offices, warehousing, and bottling operations.
The original farmhouse has been restored as a tasting room, while a renovated cellar building is home to the popular Lievland Café, offering contemporary café fare, picnic experiences, and a venue for weddings and events.
Under the leadership of head winemaker Riaan Möller, Lievland wines have gained a reputation for consistent quality and refined style. The range is particularly recognised for its Rosé and Chenin Blanc.
Across leading South African benchmarks such as the Top 10 Chenin Blanc competition and Platter’s Wine Guide, as well as international critics including Tim Atkin MW, Lievland continues to demonstrate its commitment to quality and winemaking excellence.
